HPC and Big Data track provides state-of-the-art education on using supercomputers in solving everyday computational problems and challenges. Skoltech students have unique opportunities to learn theoretical and practical methods of high-performance computing, distributed deep learning through lectures, hands-on computer labs, homework assignments and course projects that can be performed on one of Russia's top supercomputers.
Sergey Rykovanov
Associate Professor, HPC Track leader
Why this track?
The modern computational world is essentially parallel as CPUs and GPUs contain multiple cores. Datasets and computational problems are becoming so big, they can not be processed using a single computer node. Besides pursuing an academic career, students with knowledge of modern computing architectures, programming, code optimization and distributed deep learning will easily find Data Scientist, Software Engineer or IT-specialist positions in various industries including IT, Oil & Gas, Finance & Banking, Industrial R&D, Manufacturing and more.
Effectively address modern computing world challenges using existing and state-of-the-art HPC and Big Data frameworks in a variety of applications (fractals, nonlinear dynamics, cellular automata, signal and image processing, deep learning, etc.)
Solve mathematical modeling and data-intensive tasks using parallel computing
Develop and optimize massively parallel computer codes
Create efficient infrastructures for HPC clusters, Big Data, and Data Centers
Our infrastructure
The Skoltech Center for Computational and Data-Intensive Science and Engineering (CDISE) has an exceptional supercomputer infrastructure. In particularly, the flagship petaflops-level cluster "Zhores" is one of the most powerful computers in Russia specially designed for data-intensive computational modeling and Artificial Intelligence. This allows our researchers and students to perform large-scale calculations and solve resource demanding computational problems in both scientific and industrial projects in such areas as biomedicine, modeling of complex systems, oil&gas, digital pharma, photonics, predictive maintenance and many more.

The HPC infrastructure of CDISE features distributed computational resources, including three high-performance clusters:
  • The Skoltech HPC cluster "Pardus" by IBM/Lenovo;
  • The Skoltech HPC cluster "Arkuda" by Lenovo;
  • The Skoltech HPC cluster "Zhores".
Main research areas and research groups:
Research areas

  • Mathematical and Supercomputer Modeling
  • Big Data and distributed deep learning
  • Modern Computing architectures and technologies
  • Efficient Numerical Algorithms
  • Computational Complex Systems
