Photonics is among the most important areas of modern science and technology. Our MSc program provides world class education and research in photonics, bio-photonics and nanoelectronics – our students will be prepared to apply fundamental science and engineering approaches to higher-level research and industrial tasks. The program allows to customize your educational experience by selection of tracks: research-oriented, engineering-oriented, and industry-oriented (joinly with IPG Photonics).

Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology
Skoltech is a new global research university created in collaboration with MIT. The new campus, designed by Herzog de Meuron, is home to 40 world-class labs with best-in-class equipment, globally renowned professors and students from 40+ countries.
Main track
Photonics and Quantum Materials
This is a core scientific track of the program that combines in depth education in modern solid state physics and photonics with courses on innovation and commercialization. The track starts with three intensive prerequired courses on quantum mechanics, photonics and innovation that introduce student to the field and followed by a wide variety of elective courses allowing student to elaborate a track that fits his scientific interests in a best way. Access to the world-class laboratories and friendly and inspiring environment ensures that most of our graduates has at least one publication in high-impact journal.

The track can be mastered jointly with MIPT. Application to both MIPT and Skoltech are required.

Photonic Science and Engineering
The track aims to educate students to work on the industrial oriented problems of modern photonics. In addition to the fundamental knowledge in photonics including classical and quantum approaches, the students are supposed to go through intense optical practicum and selected electrical, mechanical and software engineering disciplines. The thesis work on this track aims to solve industrial oriented problems and will introduce student to the state of art photonic technologies and allow to acquire experience in communication with typical industrial processes.

The track can be mastered jointly with MIPT. Application to both MIPT and Skoltech are required.

Industrial track with IPG Photonics
IPG Photonics is the world leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance fiber lasers and amplifiers for diverse applications in numerous markets.

Students of these track will be engaged in projects related to the development, production and application of high power laser systems and new laser technologies based on fundamental scientific and applied engineering principles. The research part of the track is devoted to the development, production and introduction of high-tech products of the IPG Photonics to the international markets.

Students of this track intern in the company and receive additional scholarship from IPG Photonics.

Education
The MSc program is 2 years long: the first year is to strengthen your theoretical background, and the second year is to focus on research. Students have the freedom to choose courses and extracurricular activities to shape their individual trajectory, acquire soft skills, and gain entrepreneurial skills to prepare for employment.

The key features of this program are:
Organized in joint network form with Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology
Develops broad knowledge of fundamental areas of Applied Physics and advanced theoretical knowledge and experimental training in a sub‐discipline
Covers main topics in contemporary optics and condensed matter physics
Gives the experience of application of acquired knowledge and skills to state of the art science and industry problems as individuals or as a part of the team
Provides strong interdisciplinary collaboration in different fields, spanning physics, material sciences, mathematics biophysics, and chemistry

Program structure
The 2-year program comprises of compulsory and recommended elective courses on the most important topics, a wide set of elective courses (depending on the research and professional needs of the student), components of entrepreneurship and innovation, research activity and 8 weeks of industry immersion.

Knowledge and skills:
General Physics (mechanics, electro-magnetism, thermodynamics), Analysis, Linear algebra, Basic probability, Programming. High level of English proficiency.
Education:
Bachelor Degree in Mathematics or Physics or Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Electric or Mechanical).


English Language:
If your education has not been conducted in English, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

Every candidate must take an online profile test. You will be notified by email about the specific date and time of your test.

In-person interviews
The final selection stage takes place in Moscow. You have to pass the English exam on site, or present a valid proof of English proficiency, pass an in-person interview and entrepreneurship challenge. Extra written examinations may be required for certain programs during this time (you will be notified in advance). In case you're not from Moscow, we can accommodate you in the Skoltech dorms for the selection weekend period.
